DIY Pinecone Birdfeeder for Kids

  • Kleinstuck Preserve 1001 West Maple Street Kalamazoo, MI, 49008 United States (map)

You’re never too young to start birding! Engage your little one in the outdoors this month by taking them to a birding event just for them. Fun, engaging, and educational, this event will spark your child's curiosity about nature and the birds around them!

We will begin by venturing into Kleinstuck Preserve, looking for pinecones (or any other natural element that may suit the purpose) that we can craft into bird feeders. Once we gather our items, we will return to the trailhead and each participant will make their very own suet feeder that they can take home with them!

This event is appropriate for kids ages 4-12. Parents must be in tow. This is a great way to engage your little one in the practice of mindfulness as we notice and take notes on the birds of the forest and feed our sense of wonder and curiosity.

Ticket price is $15 per child (parent is included in this price). Please make sure to wear close toed shoes, bring anything your little one may need for the morning (snacks, water, etc), and to dress appropriately for the weather. If you have a pair of binoculars, please bring them, as there will be a limited amount of binoculars to share.

The walk is easy for kids, and there will be very little elevation change. We will meet in the parking lot of the Kalamazoo YMCA, in the back by the old tennis courts. All crafting materials will be provided.
