The majestic Great Blue Heron often stands motionless, wading in shallow waters, stalking its prey. During the spring, though, they gather in large communal roosts in the tops of trees, called “heronries”. These large colonies are where the herons mate, breed, and raise their young.
Join experienced birder, Seth Chapman, for a short hike to a local heronry, where we will observe numerous Great Blue Herons tending their roost. After this hike, you will have a deeper understanding of the Great Blue Heron, and perhaps, a deeper understanding of yourself, as we contemplate this spectacle.
This hike will take place along a segment of the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail. We will gather together in community, and learn all about the Great Blue Heron; how to identify them, their various habits, and unique characteristics that make this bird so special.
All skill levels are welcome. Registration covers one adult. Birders 10 and under are welcome to attend free of charge. This hike will take place rain or shine.
Please bring a pair of binoculars, and a travel mug for complementary chai. There will be a spotting scope available for all to use.
While not required, this Field Guide to Waterbirds of the Great Lakes Region would be a handy companion to this hike.
We will meet at the KRVT trailhead located at the intersection of G Ave W and N Pitcher St.
Trail: An easy, 2 mi hike through forest and along the Kalamazoo River. Much of the hike is on asphalt.
